Hey all. I was reading an article the other day and learned that there is a safe way to remove a USB flash drive or jump drive. I had know idea that pulling it out was unsafe or the wrong thing to do. Where do find this safe link or button or whatever it is? So far with jaws or win-eyes, I'm unable to find anything. I've looked in the systray, the taskbar, I've looked in my computer, and nothing. Is it even accessible? Help please! Apparently, I could corrupt my data or fry my flash drive? Sheesh, who knew. Thanks all!
Wooh Hooh! Lol, I figured it out! Hehehehehe, how silly. ow, if there was only a shortcut, but at least it'll always hang out in the systray now.
Hi.
I think that the problem is only in 2k, anyway i've had usb stuff for years, and i've never clicked the button.
Sods law now that you'll just take it out after reading this and it'll fail, but... yeah...
BEN.
I have many usb devices, and have never had a problem. Where did you get this info?
windows xp don't seam to have a problem if you just take it off without clicking the safe remove button but with windows 2000 it doesn't like it. It brings up this message saying unsafe removal and things like that and sometimes it doesn't save everything on the flash drive. But windows xp is working ok.
xp is nicer than most other windows releases
Man windows XP rocks. I remember yanking out the flashdrive from my old machine running ME, it got totally fried! Not just the stuff on the drive, but the computer went bezarre, it always did that but.... But yeah win XP doesn't seem particular at all
usb flash dribes are meant to be used on the fly, this is to say, plugged in and unplugged without any loss of data or compremise to the computer. xp does this rather well, but I can't talk about 2000 or mE
Hmmm, I think I read about it in someone's review on Amazon, about a sandisk mini cruzer. When I asked a friend about it, she said she always does the safe removal. I had know clue. With the mini cruser it's no prob, the light is huge and bright. With my lexar jump drive, it's a bit more tricky. The light is a red dot. Maybe I won't worry about it, smile, you guys don't seem concerned. I'm using xp as well.
Win2k doesn't enjoy having it's toys taken away and crys bitterly with all kinds of error messages. Xp however really doesn't care. The Mac is also bery forgiving when a device is extracted so pull, rip, enjoy!!!!
windows 98 is fussy too, I used it for about half a year, and man was it picky!
You are all mistaken. Win XP doesn't like it when you remove a USB flash drive. The message isn't as large as win 2k, but it's there. Like other windows pop up messages, The error shows it self in a little balloon saying unsafe removal of device. Jaws doesn't see this error message but it's there.
I would here the balloon sound, and I never have.
i first close all files and save them before i pull the flashdrive out.
Yeah, Windows xp has great plug and play support so as long as there is not a data transfer in progress when you remove the flash drive, it should be fine.
actually I've talked to a hitachi engineer some time last year, and when removing portable hard drives, always safely remove it. If you don't the drive will usually make a screaming sound when unplugged. Not good! However, you can remove flash drives without using the safely remove dialog. If you want to quickly remove the hardware safely, you should left click on the safely remove hardware icon. This just brings up a little context menu that lists all hardware that you can safely remove. At least it works with xp...
